In this latest installment of our .gay Community Spotlight series, we are excited to present an interview with the Imperial Sovereign Rose Court of Oregon.

The ISRC's mission is to organize recreational, charitable, and cultural events that foster understanding among diverse members of the community and to advocate for community functions on behalf of concerned individuals.

Learn more about their efforts in our convo below.

How would you describe your organization’s mission?

The ISRC is organized for charitable, educational, literary or scientific purposes. The ISRC is established to create recreational, charitable, and cultural activities to promote greater understanding between members of a diverse community, and to represent that community and concerned individuals in support of community functions. The ISRC shall recognize outstanding individuals and organizations for their service to the community and will support 501(c)3 organizations through contributions. In over 55 years, we have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various 501(c)3 charities.

Tell us about how that mission is brought to life through your work?

After 64 years being the first Emperor and Empress couple and all Black reign our organization is still proving to be trend setters and making a difference in our community. It is our job to be the face of the organization and use our platforms to bring awareness to the work that is being done. We as an imperial family work constantly as a unit to help raise money for other non-profits and charities through our hours of volunteers and many fundraiser put on throughout the year.

What would happen if your organization suddenly did not exist?

This is definitely a difficult question to answer or even think about as we do not foresee that happening. However, I know that each of our title holders and community members would still be out in the community making a difference. Each of us who are a part of the ISRC continue to put in time and work because we are passionate about the lives that have been changed and the amazing things our community has benefitted from.

What can people do to get involved and help make sure that never happens?

We encourage all individuals who want to make a difference and be involved to join us every 1st Monday of the month for our court meetings. Our meetings are held at the historic Darcelle XV Showplace beginning at 7:00pm. Our social media pages on Facebook and Instagram are great ways to stay connected and get the latest on our events and what’s happening in the community. Why does LGBTQ+ visibility matter to you?

We all have a voice and come from many walks of life and may not have those voices or imagery that are like represent us. To be ourselves 100% of the time while being visually & vocally present helps create a community of togetherness. We may sometimes feel alone and having LGBTQ+ Visible allows us to use our strength and platforms to help those that may need help.

In your own words, what does “LGBTQ+ safety and support” mean specifically?

Being BOLD & UNAPOLOGETICALLY YOU!!!!

Who are some of your LGBTQ+ heroes?

Poison Waters and Darcelle XV have both been a big influence in our lives and the entire community. Also, the Imperial Sovereign Rose Court for allowing a safe space for us all to be heard and a place to be ourselves.

If you could give LGBTQ+ youth one message, what would it be?

To allow yourself to just be free! People are going to judge you but use that as motivation to help those that are like you. We all have a PURPOSE in life and its important to find yours so that you can create the change that is needed.

Tell us about a time when you felt like the work you do at your organization really mattered or made a difference for the communities you serve?

We can't pinpoint a specific time because there are so many and we could be here all day. The most rewarding feeling is when we are out in the community doing the work and people let us know that they appreciate the time we commitment. When we are simply using our passion and individuals who are know us give us the motivation to keep going. It is in those moments that we appreciate that our work in the ISRC does not go unnoticed. It is what we LOVE and knowing we are apart of an organization that’s been around for over 60 years still stand strong TOGETHER!
